Meet Don quixote.

Ayal Pinkus

Dear reader,
In a village of La Mancha, of which I can not remember the name, there lived one of those old-fashioned gentlemen who keep a lance in a rack, an old shield, a lean horse, and a greyhound.

And so reads the first line of the first chapter of this classic seventeenth-century masterpiece, Don Quixote of La Mancha, which I hope you are about to start reading!

The chivalry-romance novels were perhaps the superhero comics of their time.
In the story, Don Quixote read one book too many about chivalry. One day, he decides to apply what he learned from the books. He delusionally believes that he is a knight who is on a knight-errant.

Cervantes seems to have wanted to poke fun at the chivalry-romance novels of his time, by having this person, Don Quixote, reading one too many and thinking he's become a knight on a knight-errant to win the heart of a dame.

To me, its modern-day equivalent would be someone who read one superhero comic too many, and who then puts on tights and a cape to go out and be a much-admired hero.

The chivalry-romance novels were perhaps the superhero comics of their time.

In this first chapter, he starts off by clumsily creating armor. Hilarity ensues!

I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have.

Yours truly,
Ayal Pinkus
